Recipes for Kids:
Make Dough

1 C Flour

½ C Salt

1 C Water

2 tsp Cream of tartar

1 T Oil

Mix together over medium heat.  Add food coloring (can use Kool-Aid).  Store in airtight container.

Finger Paints

½ C Cornstarch

1 C Cold water
2 C Hot water

½ C (dry) detergent

1 envelope unflavored gelatin

Various food coloring

Dissolve cornstarch in ¾ cup of the cold water and soak the unflavored gelatin in the remaining cold water; set aside.  Add hot water to the cornstarch mixture, mix and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until it comes to a boil.  Remove from heat and blend in the dissolved gelatin mixture.  Next, add your dry detergent and stir well.  Divide into snack cups and mix in your favorite food coloring.   Store in an airtight container.

Bubbles

 2 C Dishwashing detergent (Joy)

6 C Water

¾ C Karo syrup or sugar

Combine ingredients and store in an airtight container.  To blow bubbles, experiment using plastic straws, pipe cleaners formed into loops, strawberry baskets from the store, and spoons with holes in them and anything else you can think of.

 Pine Cone Bird Feeder

1 large open pine cone

Vegetable shortening or peanut butter

2 ½ Cups oats or corn meal

Bird seed

A few feet of string

In a bowl, mix ½ cup of shortening with the cornmeal or uncooked oats until well blended.  Continue adding shortening until mixture is slightly sticky. Set aside. Optional: add chopped dried fruit, chopped nuts, seeds (especially sunflower and millet), and/or suet, which are high-energy bird foods.  Tie a few feet of string to the top of a pinecone. Cover the pinecone with the mixture and hang from a tree.

 Homemade Chalk

Gather some toilet-tissue tubes, Plaster of Paris, powdered tempera paints, and a few craft supplies. Then, follow these steps.

Make a mold by covering one end of the tissue tube with duct tape. Loosely roll up a piece of waxed paper and slip it into the tube. This lining will keep the plaster from sticking to the mold. Measure ¾ cup of warm water into a disposable plastic container. Sprinkle in plaster a little at a time, until the powder no longer dissolves (about twice as much plaster as water). Stir slowly and thoroughly with a spoon. Then, mix in 2 or 3 tablespoons of tempera paint.  Rinse the spoon under an outdoor faucet or in a jar filled with water to avoid clogging sink drains.  Place the mold sealed-end down on a level surface and pour in the wet plaster. Lightly tap the sides of the tube to release air bubbles in the plaster. Let the chalk harden for a couple of days. Then, remove the tape and slide the marking stick out of the mold.

Yogurt Popsicle’s
1 carton vanilla yogurt
1 can (6 ounce) concentrated fruit juice,
(unsweetened (orange works well))
dash of vanilla

Mix well and freeze in molds (3oz paper cups can be used).
For handles, insert wooden sticks when mixture is partially frozen.

Kick the Can Ice Cream

¾ Cup whole milk

½ tsp. Vanilla

1 Cup cream

1/3 Cup sugar

Flavoring (chocolate syrup, fresh fruit, etc.)

1 (1 pound) can and 1 (3 pound) can with lids

¾ Cup rock salt

Crushed ice

Blend the milk, vanilla, cream, sugar and flavoring and pour in the smaller can; secure the lid.  Put the small can inside the big can.  Fill the big can with rock salt and ice.  Put the lid on the big can.  Play kick-the-can or just roll back and forth for 5 minutes.  Drain off water, then add more salt and ice to the large can and roll 5 to 8 minutes more.  Serves 3 to 4.

The Most Dangerous Baby Products

"When you're shopping for kid stuff, you might assume that everythng for sale in those baby stores are safe...Not necessarily. Some widely sold baby products have been associated with injuries and even deaths. In fact, 40 percent of all recalls last year were for kids' products. So before you buy anything (or accept hand-me-downs), check our guide to learn which products are hazardous, plus safe alternatives to consider." http://shopsmart.typepad.com/files/shopsmart-unsafe-kid-products-pdf-2.pdf
